Short, checked answers to the questions people ask most about 2048: where it came from, how the tiles and score work, how far the numbers can go, and how the game on Trail House behaves. Where an answer depends on this site's version, it says so.

## Questions about the game

### Who made 2048?

2048 was made by Gabriele Cirulli, an Italian web developer, and released on the web on 9 March 2014. He described it as similar to the iOS game Threes, and it was also based on an earlier clone called 1024. The original code is open source. These details come from [Wikipedia's 2048 article](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2048_%28video_game%29).

### What is the goal of 2048?

Slide numbered tiles on a four-by-four grid so that equal tiles merge into one tile worth twice as much, until you build a tile with the number 2048. In Classic 2048 on this site, the round ends with a win as soon as that tile appears.

### Is 2048 a game of luck or skill?

Both. Where a new tile lands, and whether it is a 2 or a 4, is random. How much room you leave for it, and where your large tiles sit, is up to you. Skilled play wins many more rounds, but it cannot remove the randomness.

### Is 2048 free to play here?

Yes. Every game on Trail House is free to play in the browser, with no account and no download. Progress is saved in your own browser.

## Questions about the rules

### What tiles appear in 2048?

In Classic 2048 a new tile is a 2 nine times out of ten and a 4 one time in ten. It always lands in a random empty cell, and only after a move that changed the board. Some modes change this: [Zen 2048](play/zen-2048.html) only adds 2s, and [Storm 2048](play/storm-2048.html) adds a 4 35% of the time.

### How does scoring work in 2048?

Each merge adds the value of the new tile to your score. Sliding `2 2 4 4` to the left makes a 4 and an 8, so it adds 12 points. Moves that only slide tiles score nothing.

### Can a tile merge twice in one move?

No. Each tile merges at most once per move, so `4 4 8` moved left becomes `8 8 .`, not `16`. The two 8s can merge on the next move. [Why a new tile cannot merge twice](blog/2048-merge-order.html) has more worked rows.

### What happens when the board is full?

A full board only ends the round if no two equal tiles are next to each other in any row or column. If a matching pair exists, there is still a move.

### Does a move count if nothing moves?

No. A move that cannot shift or merge any tile does nothing: no new tile appears and the move counter does not change.

## Questions about big numbers

### What is the highest tile possible in 2048?

On a four-by-four board the largest tile that can ever be made is 131,072, which needs some lucky 4s along the way. Reaching 2048 is the goal of the original game; 4096, 8192 and higher tiles are possible if you keep going. On Trail House, [4096](play/4096.html) is the mode for playing past 2048.

### How many moves does it take to reach 2048?

On average, about 930 valid moves. Every valid move adds a new tile worth 2.2 on average, and the values on the board must add up to at least 2048. Most real rounds need a few more moves than that.

### What score do you get for making 2048?

A 2048 tile built entirely from 2s earns 20,480 points along the way: 2048 for each of its ten levels of merging. Tiles that arrived as 4s skip a level, and the rest of the board adds its own points, so your actual score varies.

### Is every game of 2048 winnable?

No. Because new tiles are random, some positions cannot be saved by any move. Computer players come close: by 2022 one program built a 16384 tile in more than 95% of games, according to the same Wikipedia article.

## Questions about playing on Trail House

### Can I undo a move?

No. Moves cannot be undone. After a round ends, the move review lets you step through everything you played, and [Trail tip](how-to-play.html) can suggest a direction before you move.

### Can I keep playing after 2048?

A Classic round ends with a win at 2048. To keep building, play [4096](play/4096.html), which has the same rules and a higher goal.

### Can I play 2048 on my phone?

Yes. Swipe across the board, or tap the four direction buttons. The board, rules and saved progress are the same as on a computer.

### Is there a daily 2048 puzzle?

Yes. [Daily 2048](play/daily-2048.html) gives everyone the same starting seed for each UTC date, refreshed at midnight UTC.

### Where is my progress saved?

In your own browser, when browser storage is available. Clearing your browser data removes it. The [privacy page](privacy.html) explains exactly what is stored.
